8 COMPONENTS OF PREPARATION

Student-athletes who attend OLA will learn about the The Process of becoming elite as individuals and as a team. This involves the mastery of 8 components of preparation. The OLA program will be built around these components-

EATING RIGHT

Proper nutrition and hydration will not only be emphasized, but both will be enforced at OLA.  OLA attendees will learn what it means to follow a true ‘hockey diet’ and will have the opportunity to choose from athlete-friendly menu items at the OLA cafeteria.  Maintaining a set schedule will allow student-athletes to eat their meals at the same time every day.

SLEEPING RIGHT

The elite athlete lifestyle requires 8-10 hours of sleep per night.  OLA players will start their day between 7:30-8:00 AM and will conclude all training activities by 6:00 PM, allowing for early evenings, a rarity for a Tier I hockey player.

STUDYING RIGHT

The OLA model of 4 traditional and 3 online courses allows student-athletes the flexibility to balance academics with hockey.  On and off-ice training sessions are strategically scheduled around academic time, maximizing each individual’s focus and attention to his schoolwork.

TRAINING RIGHT

A better athlete makes a better hockey player…  TPH’s approach to on and off-ice development impacts The Hockey Athlete.  Strength, speed, athleticism and endurance will be a daily focus, as OLA attendees train off the ice, three days per week, following the group’s morning or afternoon on-ice session.

PRACTICING RIGHT

On most training days, OLA players will hit the ice once in the morning, for 45 minutes, where emphasis will be placed on individual and small group skills.  In the afternoon, the focus shifts towards team drills and game simulations, within a 50 minute pro-style practice structure that is designed to prepare the group both physically and mentally for the demands of a competitive schedule.

PLAYING RIGHT

The OLA on-ice concept of play will be built on playing hard, playing fast and playing together, within an up-tempo structure that promotes creativity and the use of hockey sense.  This structure will be comprised of habits, concepts and playing principles that lead to winning hockey, and more importantly, preparation for the most demanding coaches and systems at the junior and collegiate levels while competing in an  Independent Prep level schedule.

THINKING RIGHT

Student-athletes who attend OLA will understand the link between mental preparation and physical performance.  Lessons on topics like self-evaluating, goal setting, power thinking and emotional balance will be discussed throughout the year.

LIVING RIGHT

Leadership means doing the right thing.  All OLA attendees will take part in TPH’s Mentorship Program where they will learn what it means to become productive, self-starting young men, capable of success on the ice in the game of hockey, and off the ice in the game of life… OLA players will go through this component of the development process as a team, creating bonds and relationships that will last a lifetime.

DEVELOPMENT. EXPOSURE. OPPORTUNITY FOR ADVANCEMENT.

OLA’s 50-55 game schedule will be designed to maximize-

  • Development through competition against quality opponents.
  • Exposure to junior and collegiate hockey programs.
  • Opportunity for OLA players to advance and grow the list of #TPHTrained student-athletes who have reached the highest levels of junior, collegiate and professional hockey.

OLA will look to build a competitive, qualitative independent game schedule with the goal of attending events such as:

  • USHL and NAHL Showcases
  • New England Beast Series
  • Beantown Fall Classic
  • New England Holiday Prep Tournaments
  • Weekend series against other prep programs like Shattuck St. Mary’s, Culver Academy, St. Andrew’s College, Hill Academy, Northwood Prep, Upper Canada College and others.
